25 years ago: Local auto dealers hopeful for end of GM strike

Local auto dealers said they were hopeful the nationwide General Motors strike of 59,000 workers at 13 plants would end soon. Problems were beginning to emerge here. Most concerned were Jim Ellena of Jack Ellena Buick, Dale Willey of Willey Pontiac-Cadillac and M.D. Guthrie of Turner Chevrolet. So far, Kansas City area producers had not joined the strike against what was the world’s largest manufacturer.

After heated discussion, city commissioners decided on a split vote to take two more weeks before acting on a final plat for the controversial Naismith West Subdivision.

At the conclusion of a preliminary hearing in which a police detective said a teenager had confessed to attacking an 80-year-old Lawrence woman in her home, District Judge Mike Malone ordered the teen to stand trial on a charge of first-degree murder. The defendant was Donald Alexander, 18. The victim was Marguerite Vinyard, slain Aug. 5.
