25 years ago: KU spokesman lauds Board of Regents appointment

Kansas University spokesmen lauded the appointment of Wichita businessman Larry Jones to the Kansas Board of Regents. KU chancellor Gene Budig said he expected Jones to be a strong and active advocate for the needs of all the schools in the regents system.

Lawrence school district officials said they were “astonished” by the 115-pupil enrollment increase, which put the fall semester enrollment figure at 7,287. Assistant superintendent Bob Taylor said there had been no indication of such a rise in the headcount, which was due to alter some teaching and assignment procedures.

County commissioner Nancy Hiebert defended her meeting attendance record and charged commissioner Bob Neis with circulating a “vulgar memo” to county employees. The incident set of charges and counter-charges in the ongoing controversy that started with issues in the public works department. Beverly Bradley was the third commissioner. Neis denied signing the memo. He did not say who might have done it.
