From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 18, 1909: The big temporary generator for the power plant has arrived and is being put into place today. So the power question for the local electric line is solved for sure. However, the street car deliveries will be a day late and cannot possibly run before Monday. A big goal is to have street cars ready for the county fair next week but there are doubts now that will occur. . . . Douglas Countians in some locales got a light frost last night and rain is due over the weekend, threatening fair week events. . . L.C. Browning, who runs a garage at 918 Mass., had his right arm broken yesterday while cranking an automobile. It was a six-cylinder auto and made two revolutions before Mr. Browning could get out of the way. Browning says no mule ever kicked him that hard. . . . A reduction of rail express rates from 25 to 50 percent is being sought in a letter from here to the board of railroad commissioners in Topeka. Local people say the rates here are far above those elsewhere. . . . Wisconsin is the latest state for a visit from the traveling President Taft, who is covering nearly 13,000 miles to get in touch with the people.
