100 years ago: Proposal would bring area shoppers in by free rail

From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 17, 1909: The merchants association is setting up a trade day when people from all over the area are to be brought in via free rail fare to see what Lawrence has to offer in the way of business and shopping. It has good potential. . . . J. Willis Gleed of Topeka, head many for Bell Telephone Co. was here today to explain why Bell service costs as much as it does. He says charges are higher because of better and broader service but he agrees to pay the 2 percent franchise fee the city is insisting upon. . . . Sam Strobel of Eudora, struck by lightning Monday, is beginning to get some of his hearing back. He was totally deaf after being hit. There is hope of a full recovery. . . . University registrar George Foster today refused admittance to Richard Hocker of Kansas City, the young man who was expelled from West Point last spring on a charge of hazing. He can be enrolled here only if the school that expelled him gives him special dispensation. He has a case to make here before he can enroll, officials say. . . . The rushing season is full swing for local fraternities and sororities and some groups say they plan on the taking the largest numbers of newcomers in their history.
