25 years ago: Interest in Holidome for sale

Brock Hotel Corp. of Irving, Texas, was negotiating to sell its interest in the Lawrence Holidome, 200 McDonald Dr. Brock, currently holding the lease agreement with an option to buy from the city, was seeking to transfer its lease and bond obligations to John Q. Hammons in Springfield, Mo. He was involved in the operation of 70 Holiday Inns in the United States. The local hotel had been completed in 1982 at a price tag of $10 million.

The total property tax rate for Lawrence residents was to rise by about 4.39 mils, or about 3.4 percent, to a combined mill levy of 132.01 for calendar 1985. The 1984 budget had a levy of 127.62. The count valuation figure had rised about $2 million over the past year.

Rainfall of about two inches fell overnight and Jack Lindquist, county agriculture agent, called it “very welcome, producing a lot of smiles for those badly in need of moisture.”

The city commission was to consider a final plat on the Naismith West Subdivision, a controversial development that had raised fears among neighbors.
