The Free State volleyball team opened its season with a 2-1 showing Thursday at its home quad.

The Firebirds defeated Olathe North (25-11, 25-11) and Shawnee Mission North (25-22, 21-25, 25-19) before falling to Olathe South (25-15, 25-23).

Free State (2-1) will travel to the Mo-Kan Invitational on Saturday in Lee’s Summit, Mo.
