100 years ago: Board of education raises tuition

From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 9, 1909: “The board of education has raised the tuition for outside pupils in local schools, with rates of $20, $25 and $30 for the various grades. Most of the increases are 75 percent more than they were last year. … Twenty-five Wakarusa Valley farmers have decided to go to work on a watershed to cut down or eliminate annual flood losses. Muddy roads caused by a recent record eight-inch downpour did not allow many to attend but the general feeling is that a watershed is in the future. … The directors of Westminster House, the Presbyterian Bible chair, have secured $15,000 to build Westminster House here. Work on a splendid new building is due to begin immediately. . . . The iron poles needed for the electric line have arrived and the street car force is jubilant.”
