25 years ago: Youth phone hacking ring busted

A ring of at least two dozen Kansas City area youths using home computers to make free calls on major long-distance networks had been broken up after Southwestern Bell Telephone “hacked back” to trace the troublemakers. Computer officials said many such scams would result in the years ahead as electronic “miracles” proliferated.

Cooling rain finally arrived and firefighters said they hoped the moisture and lower temperatures would lessen greatly the fire dangers here. Wind accompanied the rain, downing trees and power lines. The needed rainfall measured .61 of an inch.

A group of Kansas University graduate students were conducting an intensive study to see what the downtown streetcape amounted to and how it could be turned to the city’s advantage.

The fact-finder in the contract dispute between local teachers and the school district closed the October sessions to the public. Alan Alderson, Topeka attorney, said the sessions the coming month would be closed to all but the negotiating teams.

Noted Kansan Alf Landon, onetime Republican presidential candidate and former governor, celebrated his 97th birthday and declared he was making plans for the observance of his 100th.
