Women do yoga around a medicine wheel at a Women’s Equinox Retreat. Organizers of the Three Feathers Spiritual Enrichment Center say they often blend various faith backgrounds into their practices.

Rick and Kathy Daugherty wanted people who didn’t fit in at traditional religious groups to have a place to worship.

So they co-founded the Three Feathers Spiritual Enrichment Center, with the goal of restoring health to the planet by reconnecting people with their spiritual source, their natural environment and themselves.

But that’s not to say they’re not accepting of other faiths.

“These practices enhance the faith practices you’re already plugged into,” Kathy says. “It’s like a black-and-white TV turning into a color TV.”

Those practices include fire walks, non-traditional sweat lodges, women’s circles and energy healing.

Rick says it’s all done without passing judgment or pushing beliefs onto visitors.

“My job is not to tell you what to believe,” he says. “My job is to give you accurate information and let you make the choice from there.”

One of the practices Rick uses is energy healing, allowing people to be informed about any spiritual problems they may be having.

“I close my eyes and go inside and read if there’s any blockage in energy flow in the body,” Rick says. “I can look into past lives and look into the current lifetime and see what the issues are and what’s entangled there. If they’re frustrated with themselves or with someone else, I can help untangle those emotions.”

Another process, called a fire walk, allows people to see their fears as the illusions that they truly are. According to Lawrence resident and Three Feathers member Cynthia McKay, hot coals are raked out over the ground and people walk across them. But it’s not as scary as it sounds.

“If you’re spiritually ready, there’s an energy vortex that absorbs the energy of the fire so no one gets burned,” she says. “It’s an amazing experience.”

The women’s circles are another component of the Three Feathers Center. In these circles, Kathy leads women through lessons on how to respect their bodies and honor their womb space.

“I do try to help people understand that the earth is a conscientious being, and we work in harmony with her,” she says.

The Daughertys also want to let others who are afraid of being pegged into one faith know that they draw from a variety of traditions.

“One lady described us as a giant smorgasbord of spiritual tools,” Kathy says. “Folks have tried to put us in a box and haven’t really found one we fit in yet.”
