Police responded Sunday to a report of gunshots fired in the 1000 block of Massachusetts Street.

According to Lawrence Police Sgt. Susan Hadl, police were in the area of the Granada, 1020 Mass., about 2:00 a.m. Sunday, when an officer reported the sound of a gunshot nearby. Police were investigating Sunday a report of gunshots fired in the 1000 block of Massachusetts Street.

Police recovered a single shell casing in the parking lot south of the Granada.

As of Sunday night, no one had been reported injured and no one was arrested in connection with the incident.

Hadl said a massive crowd of people was socializing and congregating in the area after a party at the Granada ended. Police were on scene handling a disturbance and controlling the crowd when the shots fired report came out.

According to the building's marquee and a event listing, the Granada was hosting Saturday night an event called the Bay Boy Postgame Party.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Lawrence Police at (785) 832-7509 or the TIPS hot line at (785) 843-TIPS.

An earlier version of this story included an incorrect address for the Granada.

Ya thug bay boy postgame shoot someone party!!!

Kawatchi 8 years, 1 month ago

So are the suspects from Topeka or KCK?

handlon 8 years, 1 month ago

Maybe the Granada should paint some gang-like graffiti on their marquee out front, just like Club Axis had......

Matt Schwartz 8 years, 1 month ago

topeka or kansas city? that's tired...we've got that element here now....get used to it.

misslawrence 8 years, 1 month ago

Thank You tan!!! I'm sooo sick of hearing about Topeka/KC myself.,,..,it's in Lawrence now,so who cares who's from where.,.,the damage has already been done,.,.,.go on,.,

Funny how these shootings always seem to coincide with hip-hop shows. I don't recall anyone getting shot after, say, an Okkervil River show.

David Albertson 8 years, 1 month ago

Shut down the Granada and any other bar that has frequent shootings.

Matthew Herbert 8 years, 1 month ago

FarneyMac - just FYI

Worst concert violence of all time:

  1. Rolling Stones, Altamont Speedway, '69 (not hip-hop)
  2. The Who, Cincinnati, '79 (not hip-hop)
  3. Pearl Jam, Roskilde Fest, 2000 (not hip-hop)
  4. Damageplan, Columbus Ohio, 2004 (not hip-hop)
  5. AC/DC, Salt Lake City, 2006

The examples go on and on............

topeka has found mass st. again? can't we charge the city of topeka a fine for our officers dealing with their thugs?

conservativepunker 8 years, 1 month ago

Ren...I wouldn't call The Who Cinci show was a horrible accident, thanks to the 70s phenomenon called "Festival Seating" , the incident akin to someone say falling off of a balcony because they lost their balance. Indeed, Altamont was violence, but I have to disagree with Cinci.

skinny 8 years, 1 month ago

Yup, guess it is time to shut down the Granada. We can't be having these things going on here in Lawrnece. This'll make the third business Lawrene has shut down for catering to this type of stuff.

Keith 8 years, 1 month ago

They won't be shutting it down, someone well connected owns it.

Phil Minkin 8 years, 1 month ago

Saying hip hop causes violence is like saying country music causes bad teeth.

Crystal Patterson 8 years, 1 month ago

Studies have proven that country music does in fact cause bad teeth.

jonas_opines 8 years, 1 month ago

"This'll make the third business Lawrene has shut down for catering to this type of stuff."

Man, it's like. . . almost like. . . shutting the places down does absolutely nothing to address the problem. No, that can't be it, it's the simplest solution available, so it has to be the most effective.

bad_dog 8 years, 1 month ago

Altamont's violence was largely attributed to rampant drug/alcohol use and gang involvement. A member of The Hell's Angels allegedly hired to provide stage security (for $500 worth of beer which they consumed while providing their services) stabbed a gun brandishing member of the crowd in front of the stage. He was later acquitted on the basis of self-defense. Two others died accidentally as a result of a hit and run and one drowned. Four people died in all and four more were born.

Psssssht......connected.... ml..... he's still sitting at the lawrence "kids table."..... I say we let compton buy it and turn it into another vaccant $1,000,000 first management billboard.

MrGetDown: Do you have any suggestion on how to handle the rise in incidents at whatever bar or club they decide to go to next?

greenworld 8 years, 1 month ago

If guns were outlawed only outlaws would have guns

roguesword 8 years, 1 month ago

Yeah, it's the theater that's responsible for people being violent. Here i was thinking it was just the way people are. Silly me. Closing venues only prevents commerce.

lounger 8 years, 1 month ago

I dont want to sound typical but history dictates that this has a STRONG possibility of coming from Topeka or KCK. Im not picking on them its just true-80% of the shootings in this town associated with clubs are from those two towns. Sure its in lawrence but not NEAR as much as your typical midwestern town.

That Party Last Night Went Well Inside, It Was College ID Night, And once Rejected people Congregated Outside! The Axis Crowd Heard About This Party And Came To Granada To Find Out It Was A College Event And They Were Rejected!

Mad And Fustrated They Wanted To Get Some BS Anger Out And Want To Shoot.. Coward Like! If You Ask Me! Bay boy Puts together Good events thats why Granada trusts them to have events at that venue! They Are well orchestrated and The Events are made for a college crowd!

greenworld 8 years, 1 month ago

So where are all the thugs suppose to go? Was crosstown not open or allstars? lol

parlet 8 years, 1 month ago

foodboy writes: "Saying hip hop causes violence is like saying country music causes bad teeth."

Given the regularity of violence and gunplay at rap/hip hop events in Lawrence, foodboy's statement is both moot and inane.

1080 Mass?
that'd put it in the middle of south park!

No one reported injured; No one arrested in connection with early Sunday incident

---no hits, no fowls, no errors. My major concern about violence at allstars or club821 or outside granada is not that the intended target gets hit, 'cuz so often its little thuggies shooting little thuggies.

I'm just worried where other bullets might finish their paths.

rousseau108 8 years, 1 month ago

Doesn't Bay Boy do a lot of the promotions for Club Axis/Club 821?

Christine Anderson 8 years, 1 month ago

I just want to know what is so very wrong with some people that they have nothing better to do at 2 a.m. on a Saturday night. I can think of at least one alternative, which does not lnvolve standing around in a parking lot acting like animals at 2 a.m., fighting, or shooting off a weapon. Morons. My mother taught me better.

South Park is in the 1100 block of Mass. 1080 Mass is north of 11th Street.

Ostrix 8 years, 1 month ago

People must not spend a great deal of time downtown if they think we have that element here in Lawrence. These events are invariable caused by people form outside the community. Downtown is safe 99% of the time. Shutting down the Granada, accusing Mike Logan of elaborate cover ups is laughable, and hip hop causing violence is even more so. There is more violence being generated by the frats than by hip hop shows, are you suggesting we shut them down too? It makes me sad that such ignorant statements are coming from the only progressive place in the entire state. If you people want to blame someoe, blame the fools doing it.

bearded_gnome 8 years, 1 month ago

NotaSquishy: you desperately need some geography!

if Mass went to "1080 mass" it'd be in the middle of South Park!

note: Granada 1020 Massachusetts StLawrence,KS66044-2922 (785) 842-1390 Write a Review

Papa keno's is I think 1035, and watkins museum is maybe 1046 Mass, right at the corner.

I was humorously identifying an obvious typo in the story.

it seems so much violence happens when Asher Fusco is on duty down at the LJWorld...I blame Asher rather than rap music.

emptymind 8 years, 1 month ago

Hmmm...I went to several good shows there years ago, and had a great time. It was a good venue until they changed from blues to hip hop. Bring back the LOCAL blues crowd and see how many shootings there are. Are you listening Mr Owner??

NotASquishHead 8 years, 1 month ago

bearded_gnome, I have more sense of geography than you could ever hope to have. Logic indicates that anything >=1000 and <=1099 is in the 1000 block, meaning between 10th and 11th Streets.

The official address to South Park is 1141 Massachusetts, so no, 1080 Mass would not be in South Park.

Another note, Watkins Museum would not be 1046 Mass, as it is on the West side of the street, meaning it would have an odd number. With the exception of North Lawrence, all addresses on the West or South sides of the street are odd and all addresses on the East or North sides of the street are even. You are correct in that 1080 Mass does not exist, as 1040 Mass is the greatest even number in the 1000 block, but way off in your "geography". If it did exist it would still be north of 11th, not "in South Park."

Better luck next time.

Susan Mangan 8 years, 1 month ago

Thank you, NotASquish...your long explanatory post saved me from having to type a long explanatory

As a general rule to others, when insulting someone's "lack of" geography understand, it helps to have a firm grasp of the matter, yourself. As "NotA" said, 10-anything Mass would be north of 11th St. I'm not sure how you could get South Park out of that. There's an empty lot in the 1000 block of Mass near the Granada, I believe. If they decided to build something there, they wouldn't start from the highest unused number available (what?...30-something). It would be 10-something Mass...perhaps 1080. They give you general street addresses, like that, as a convenience, to figure out, roughly, where an incident occured.

bearded_gnome 8 years, 1 month ago

yes, that was a typo for watkins, probably 1047.

geez squishy, my point was: there is no 1080 mass! fgs. and if there were, then 11th st would be shoved way south! like about the middle of south park! note I did post the correct address for the Granada, 1020* mass!

now, please reapply the preparation H, you seem to need it.

Harpo 8 years, 1 month ago

I pray the Granada isn't actually in South Park as it will be unsafe to attend the Wednesday night City Band concerts. If I ever read the headline "Shots Fired During Sousa Medley" and it's not the cannon part in Stars and Stripes Forever I'm leaving town!

rousseau108 (Anonymous) says… Doesn't Bay Boy do a lot of the promotions for Club Axis/Club 821?

....They Were Asked By The Owner Chris Windler To Promote, But The Owner was Rejected by Bayboy because of the Crowd he already had.

Chris Hated Bay boy because it took the last of the college student that actually came to that club! So he wanted to bring them in!

bayboy promotes college parties I Love Them They Give college students a lot to do around town!

notfromhere 8 years, 1 month ago

If your going to close the Granada for the bad element why not close the Jayhawk motel, please see the other article in the news today,or the college motel seems to me that's where your bad element is staying, but oh yeah then you wouldn't have anywhere to hide them from the so called decent folk of lawrence or prospective tuition paying parents. Clean up your crack heads and their homes if your going to do something productive for lawrence.

newsomebody 8 years, 1 month ago

It's not the bars fault. There is noway to control who comes into your parking lot or who drives by. The Granada last night, AXIS in July, and The Hawk in March where three people where shot. These people that did the shooting weren't in the club. This is a fact. I know all three bar owners personaly. Bayboy does parties at the Granada, AXIS, and Econo Lodge. They've had trouble at all these locations with the crowd. KCMO, BayBOY wasn't hired by the bar's to bring a college crowd, they hired bayboy to bring people. Bayboy's crowd is a large college population, but not everyone. The crowd didn't come from AXIS either. AXIS hasn't done every week parties on Saturday for over two months. The crowd has been smaller and more local, and has done Hard Rock bands as well. So can't blame the shooting on AXIS!! Trailer park shooting last sunday night, blame on AXIS. Person robbed last monday at gun point, blame on AXIS. Shooting at Granada, blame on AXIS! Three people shot at Hawk, blame on AXIS! You can blame AXIS all you people want, bar's can't stop people from driving by and shooting!! COPS DO!! The Ranch, Abe's, Brothers, The Hawk all have Cops at there bar on busy night at close. So why aren't they out side of the Granada, or even AXIS?? Everytime you close a bar the crowd just changes bar's!! Last Called closed and ever since there has been a shooting at the Granada, Hawk, AXIS, and a stabbing at Jet Lag. Bar's aren't going anywhere, and because people that start trouble that don't even go inside the bar, start trouble out side the clubs it's the bar's fault. Law enforcement officers are the only one's that can stop this. If that means adding more officers, do so. What's another million to had more officers. The City of Lawrence spends enough money on other BS, hire more officers.

i heard about the shot, glad i wasn't out and about. anyway, just foolishness; plain and simple. glad that nobody got hurt.
