100 years ago: School buildings repaired for fall

From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 1, 1909: “School buildings have received extensive repairs this summer and schools are equipped with sanitary drinking fountains under provisions of the new laws. The fountains do away with the cups that could spread so many ailments. … The new insurance rates have gone into effect, by state order, and they run about 12 percent below what some insurers indicated at first they would charge. State officials mandated reductions after visiting here and there could be further drops.”
