The city of Lawrence and a contractor from Eudora will receive federal money to help reduce emissions in their diesel-burning vehicles, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment said Tuesday.

The city will get $26,800 to retrofit some of its municipal vehicles to more efficiently burn the fuel.

Ernie Simon Backhoe & Excavating, Eudora, will receive $36,000 to install new engines in its fleet of fewer than five vehicles. The engines cut emissions by burning low-sulfur diesel.

The grants were among a dozen chosen by KDHE from among 47 applications received from across the state. Money comes from the Environmental Protection Agency through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Earlier this year, the Kansas Department of Transportation and Westar Energy also were approved to receive stimulus grants to reduce diesel emissions in their fleet vehicles.
