Tallgrass Beef uses Identigen system

Identigen North America Inc., a Lawrence-based operation whose technology allows companies to verify the source of meat products, has landed Tallgrass Beef Co. as a client.

Tallgrass Beef, founded four years ago in Sedan by TV journalist Bill Kurtis, plans to certify each package of its meat in retail cases with Identigen’s “DNA TraceBack” seal.

The seal indicates that the beef in each package can be traced to its origin, in this case Kurtis’ 10,000-acre ranch in Sedan or any of the other family farms or ranches in the Tallgrass Beef network. Tallgrass Beef produces grass-fed, grass-finished beef.

Geneticists from Trinity College in Ireland developed DNA TraceBack in 1996, and the system’s clients include European retailers Tesco, Superquinn and Dunnes Stores.

Identigen Ltd. opened its North American division three years ago at 4824 Quail Crest Place.
