‘Jewish Jordan’ to speak at KU

Tamir Goodman, who made headlines as a high school senior dubbed the “Jewish Jordan,” will speak Monday at an event that includes a basketball clinic and 3-on-3 basketball tournament aimed at raising money for prostate cancer.

Before playing professionally in the United States and abroad, Goodman made headlines as a high school senior in Baltimore in 1999-2000 before turning down a scholarship to Maryland because, as an observant Jew, he did not want to play on Friday nights. He ended up at Towson University, where the school managed to change its basketball team’s schedule to accommodate him. He played there two years before signing with a professional team in Israel.

“There is no doubt that his unique experience of standing steadfast in his religious and cultural values in the face of immense pressures will inspire and educate the listeners in their own journeys of life,” says Rabbi Zalman Tiechtel of Chabad.

Goodman’s visit includes a free kosher dinner and presentation at 6 p.m. Monday at Robinson Gymnasium, 1301 Sunnyside Ave. After the presentation will be a short basketball clinic at 7 p.m., followed by a 3-on-3 basketball tournament by Zeta Beta Tau fraternity and Chabad.
