100 years ago: Meat markets to be closed on Sundays

From the Lawrence Daily World for Oct. 24, 1909: “Chancellor Frank Strong of KU had another big faculty meeting to discuss plans for the current year and the future and he says he will keep trying to make faculty meetings valuable to all. … Virtually all meat markets here will be closed on Sundays to help cut down on expenses. Butchers advise to buy meat supplies on Saturday to prevent Sunday problems. … A door to door magazine salesman has been arrested for swindling after trying to sell the Ladies’ Home Journal at an unusual low price he could not meet.”
