25 years ago: Kassebaum speaks about Cold War

Despite the Soviet boycott of mutual arms reduction talks in Vienna and the Soviet walkout during arms taks in Geneva, there were indications the Soviet Union and the United States were moving toward arms control talks, U.S. Sen. Nancy Kassebaum told a Kansas University audience. There are “clear and convincing reasons” for the Soviet Union to return to the bargaining table, the Kansas Republican said in talks at KU and at a Lawrence Chamber of Commerce session.

The pharmaceutical rseearch section of Kansas University’s West Campus was named the Takeru Higuchi Biomedical Researach Area in honor of the noted KU professor whose accomplishments included pioneering work with time-release drugs. Much of Higuchi’s internationally known work was considered years ahead of its time.

A controversial proposal to eliminate a dozen or more master’s degree programs at Emporia State University was tabled in the face of protests from the chool and Emporia residents.

After a long and heated debate, Lawrence Memorial Hospital received first-round approval for an $860,000 building project. The proposed two-story addition to the west side of the building would contain a new ambulatory surgery center and education facility.
