25 years ago: Liberal arts study recommended

A Reagan administration panel was urging colleges to require two years of liberal arts study even if it forced students in business and technical fields to stay on campus longer than the traditional four years. Proponents said that undergraduates should have at least two years of liberal education before specializing.

Bob and Elizabeth Dole were featured at a political rally by about 800 Republican oriented people on the Stan Zaremba farm south of Lawrence. Dole was a noted U.S. senator and Elizabeth was U.S. transportation secretary. They were promoting the re-election of Ronald Reagan.

Proposed changes in the Massachusetts and Vermont bridges over the Kaw River could not be made without more study, county commissioners said. The county was the legal “guardian” of the bridge situation and had to make the decisions on any changes.

The area got more rain and the overnight temperatures were to be at freezing or below in a number of sectors.
