100 years ago: Lawrence man recovers from fall

From the Lawrence Daily World for Oct. 18, 1909: Three men were burned to death, two more fatally injured and 28 horses were cremated in a stable fire this morning in Wichita. . . . Edward Root of Lawrence fell more than 100 feet down an embankment on a bridge project and has recovered miraculously. He was in a Mexico hospital three weeks and returned home yesterday. Friends say is had to be a miracle that he survived. . . . Gov. Stubbs has asked the university chancellor to prepare a statement showing where all the money appropriated by the legislature is going. The statement is to be used as evidence in the tax controversy that is now going on. Gov. Stubbs claims that practically all the increases in appropriations went to the educational institutions for important work and now wants statements showing the great need for increases at all the school, particularly at a growing KU.
