Topeka ? Democratic state Rep. Raj Goyle posted what even the GOP said Friday were impressive fundraising numbers during the first three months of his campaign for Kansas’ 4th Congressional District.

Goyle, from Wichita, reported receiving more than $403,000 in contributions during the three months ending Sept. 30. He kicked off his campaign for the south-central Kansas seat in July. He ended the third quarter with about $367,000 in campaign cash.

The seat is open because Republican Rep. Todd Tiahrt, who has held it since 1995, is running for the U.S. Senate. Five candidates are seeking the GOP nomination, and none of their fundraising for the last quarter matched Goyle’s, according to reports available so far from the Federal Election Commission.

“It’s an impressive amount for one quarter — you can’t take that away from him,” said Lisa Burgess, spokeswoman for the Kansas Republican Party.

Still, Burgess said the GOP is confident that a strong candidate will emerge from the August 2010 primary and that the Wichita area remains a “good Republican hot spot.”

Among GOP candidates who filed reports, Mike Pompeo, a Wichita businessman, had the strongest showing, reporting almost $99,000 in contributions and finishing the quarter with $270,000 in cash. However, not all five GOP candidates’ reports were available. A retired court services officer, Robert Tillman, has said he’ll seek the Democratic nomination, but he hasn’t organized a campaign.

The state’s other open congressional seat is in the sprawling 1st District of western and central Kansas. Incumbent Republican Jerry Moran is challenging Tiahrt in the Senate race.

In the 1st, state Sen. Tim Huelskamp of Fowler led six Republican hopefuls in fundraising during the third quarter. He reported almost $182,000 in contributions and finished the quarter with nearly $379,000 in cash.

The only Democrat campaigning, former Salina Mayor Alan Jilka, launched his bid Oct. 1, the day after the quarter ended.
