Nobel Peace Prize is meaningless

October 14, 2009

“War will continue until the end...” (Daniel 9:26)

Like the Pulitzer Prize for journalism, along with the Oscar and Emmy for film and television, the Nobel Peace Prize is an inside job in which liberal, wishful-thinking humanists give awards to each other.

For all I care, the Nobel Committee could have given their useless (except for the money) prize to Homer Simpson. Like President Obama, Homer has done nothing to earn it, though he may be the only character who has been on TV more than the president.

According to the Web site, there are currently “42 active conflicts and/or wars in the world today.” Not all are shooting wars at the moment and there are several civil wars and conflicts between Israel and various terrorist groups, but 42 wars is a lot of war.

Peace generally occurs when aggressive evil is defeated, which is why Germany and Japan no longer war with the United States. The Nobel Committee apparently believes that by diplomatically singing “All we are saying is give peace a chance” evil people will study war no more and be so impressed by our intentions they will lay down their arms.

Iran’s president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, could win the Nobel Peace Prize in an instant if he announced his god had told him not to eradicate Israel, or usher in Armageddon. But Ahmadinejad won’t, because he is evil and must be defeated. Neither will he respond to negotiations, or sanctions. Same with Osama bin Laden. The United Nations would welcome him as a speaker and the Nobel Committee would award him their top prize if he would announce he no longer believes in terrorism and has become a follower of the Dali Lama or some other “acceptable” pseudo-deity. He also will do no such thing because he is evil and must be defeated.

The Nobel Committee believes George W. Bush is evil, but apparently not bin Laden or Ahmadinejad. It cringes at leaders who wish to overcome evil by force rather than have the forces of evil overcome them. The Nobel Committee hates Israel, too. And this is because its members, and like-minded male wimps around the world, idolize Michael J. Fox instead of John Wayne and find their role models in the liberal ladies of “The View,” not in muscular characters like Jack Bauer (and Chloe, who gets it) on “24.”

The peace prize concept is flawed because the problem of war does not lie with those who would make peace, but with those who would make war. If the Nobel Committee were realistic, it would stop handing out peace prizes and start issuing awards for those who have confronted evil and produced peace in nations that have only known oppression. Candidates for such prizes would include Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher and Pope John Paul II, who conspired to liberate Europe from the totalitarian hand of Soviet communism.

Bill Clinton would also be a legitimate candidate for his efforts that stabilized Bosnia. He could take some small credit for the peace in Northern Ireland, which, though worked on for decades, was finally brokered on his watch. President Obama was right when he acknowledged that he doesn’t deserve the prize. Neither did Yasser Arafat, Henry Kissinger, Le Duc Tho or Al Gore.

The question should be: Why, despite man’s best efforts, including the League of Nations and United Nations, have we been unsuccessful in eradicating war? The answer lies in this ancient wisdom: “What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You want something but don’t get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.” (James 4:1-3)

That’s why a peace prize is meaningless.

I think the Nobel committee gave the Peace Prize to President Obama in large part as a way of recognizing the peace-seeking intentions of the American public as a whole. It was the voting majority, after all, who found common ground with what candidate Obama was saying during the presidential campaign -- about ending the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, about working to clean up the environment, about safeguarding our own nation by creating a better health care system, about conferring with other nations instead of continuing a unilateral foreign policy attitude.

The majority of Americans wanted the exact same things to happen again, after eight years of seeing the damage done in these areas by Bush/Cheney. Indeed, almost the whole world wants to see better behavior demonstrated by the U.S. government. So if the Nobel committee gives the Peace Award to President Obama, it is a reflection of not just their relief at Obama's actions, but also a reflection of their gratitude that so many American citizens share the same views and attitudes as the president.

In short, the Peace Award wasn't really given to President Obama alone, as an individual; it was given to all Americans in recognition of our return to exercising basic decent values.

It seems Cal's biggest problem is the committee doesn't give the award to HE thinks they should so they are bad. Here's an idea Cal - get a group of like minded people together, pitch in some cash, and you can give an award to whomever you think deserves it. That's all the Nobel is. That way you can have your (to paraphrase Cal) conservative, non-thinking religious zealot awards you can give to each other. See all fair and balanced. You can call it the Ronny Reagan and Marge Thatcher had a love child and his name is G.W. Bush Award. The RRMTLCGWB Award. Kinda catchy isn't it?

"The Nobel Committee apparently believes that by diplomatically singing “All we are saying is give peace a chance” evil people will study war no more and be so impressed by our intentions they will lay down their arms."

Maybe what the committee is saying CAL is that in their opinion John Wayne wanna'be's starting wars with countries that haven't attacked you and have no real way to attack you is no way to achieve peace. Was it an award for Obama or against Bush? Who cares! Right or wrong it's their award. They can give to anyone they want. Why does what a bunch of Norwegians think bother Cal so much anyway?

This just in: Smelt Wrestling World Congress has announced that Dear Leader is now the Champion for Life in all three weight classifications, light-smelt, welter-smelt and super heavy-smelt.

Who doesn't have an "agenda"? The Nobel Committee has made theirs so conspicuous that their awards are a sham. This one was, however, a surprise. It is beyond undeserved. Like the e-mail forward I got: Breaking News: President Obama Watches Football Game: Wins Heisman. Too bad for Todd Resing and other legitimate candidates.

Pitts pretty well describes Cal's latest bit of idiocy in his column.

At least the committee was smart enough not to give him the NPP for economics.

If they want to end the war pull our troops out and bomb the hell out of them from a far just like Kawait in the earley 90's. it would only take 24 hours to end the whole thing. No more of our troops would have to die.

TheGreatSantini... "Those who believe world peace is attainable are the biggest idiots on the planet."

That's not true at all. I mean Obama decided not to put the missile shield in Eastern Europe to get on Russia's good side in hopes they would support sanctions against Iran. And that plan has worked out perfectly…

This just goes to show that if you give bullies what they want, they will start being your friend.

just_another_bozo_on_this_bus 6 years ago

"At least the committee was smart enough not to give him the NPP for economics."

Considering that the main reason he got the Nobel Peace Prize is that he's not Bush the Warmonger, he might just as well have been given the Nobel Prize in Economics for not being Bush the Economy-Wrecker.

Flap Doodle 6 years ago

So bozo is saying that if the Democrats had put a cheeseburger in the White House, a cheeseburger would have won the NPP.

just_another_bozo_on_this_bus 6 years ago

A cheeseberger? Probably not-- it couldn't have met the constitutional requirements. I think Maynard G. Krebs would have been in the running, though.

"It is weird the 'Obama' the left has conjured up in there heads."

Tom, for the last time, please get out of my head. You have more than ample room in your own own skull.

"For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful,Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." (Isa 9:6)

The government is on Obama's shoulders. Many liberals call him "wonderful;" and he was just anointed as the "Prince of Peace." The prophecy is fulfilled...

tbaker 6 years ago

The NPP committee know that crass ineptitude always requires explanation.

So Bush is the economy wrecker huh Bozo?

Have ya seen the unemployment numbers? Have ya seen the record deficit / debt numbers? Do you know whats happening with the dollar? Have you considered what trillions in printed money pumped into our economy is going to do to inflation? At what point is Mr. Obama going to be responsible for this?

Bush the war monger? How come Mr. Obama is still using the Bush National Security Strategy? Why hasn't he published one? Why are there more American military folks deployed into war zones today than there ever were under Bush?

The involuntary liberal spasm to blame Bush for everything just reinforces the puerile nature of this argument and reinforces the growing perception that the left has no real solutions.

By all means, keep it up Bozo. Shout it loud. It helps the libertarian conservative moment when you convince people the liberal left can't really fix anything.

Well, The Nobel was meaningless........until all of the hate monger neo-cons decided to elevate its importance when their favorite target Obama won! Jeez get a life! Get a hold of yourselves! You cannot change the outcome of the election! Obama won! Get over it!

"You cannot change the outcome of the election!"

In 1119 days, I remind you to remember you said that shotgun.

How about Anita Dunn the Whitehouse Communications Director taking on Fox News all the whilst ignoring the news media cronies in the Obama Administration. Talk about a double standard!!!!

"Well, that is certainly an apt description of an Obama-sympathizing “news” segment on Wolf Blizter’s CNN Politics show, which purported to “fact check” a Saturday Night Live skit mocking the president’s lack of accomplishments. Yes, the “real” news fact-checked the fake news to cover for Obama’s deficiencies. Zero complaints from the White House communications office about that. Or about authentic CNN journalist Anderson Cooper using his prime-time show to make vulgar sexual jokes about Tea Party activists. Or about the joint White House-ABC News health care reform infomercial that aired earlier this summer."

Some “opinion journalism” is more equal than others. For some reason that makes the Whiehouse look like a bunch of incompetent crybabies when it comes to the news.

And notice, not a peep out the the "Lame Stream" media about supression of Freedom of Speech, which includes "Freedom of the Press", even if it is in oopposition to the President.

Imagine if President Bush had done this with Andy Card, or Perrino!!

Talk about hypocrites!!!

"Considering that the main reason he got the Nobel Peace Prize is that he's not Bush the Warmonger"

That statement is incredibly stupid on more than one level. We shouldn't underestimate the difficulty involved or the lack of self-awareness present in crafting such a sentence. Kudos to bozo!

I'd sure vote for a cheeseburger over McCain/palin especially if it had bacon on it, and if french fries were the running mate.

Actually headline should have read “All weak in the knees liberals are at war with Cal Thomas and the truth”.

Clearly, Cal, if you are writing about it it isn't meaningless to you.

i didn't read any of the above comments.

but, i did read all 3 editorials (as they were all on the same topic): and cal thomas analyzed this event just as thinly and myopically as he analyzes any topic.

ljworld editors: why does this writer continue to show up on your editorial page, when he so clearly wants to be printed on your "faith and belief" page?

"We're not obsessed with FOX news... We're making fun of the “Linwood Perspective”"

We're? We are?! Bwahaha..harumph..'um..'scuse me. It's just that porch speaking for a group is comedy gold. Tickles.

Porch_Person: Taking the high road, I see. Attacking a guy and basically being an elitist snob by insinuating that Lawrence people (you) are more intelligent and more enlightened than Linwood people (Tom) is really the way to go.

Are you really deluded into thinking that Lawrence is some sort of isolated mecca in what the left/right coasts see as a backward hick state? ALL of Kansas is flyover country to elitists, that includes Lawrence regardless of what you think. How does it feel to be a hick?

shockchalk 5 years, 12 months ago

Boris and Jason are correct........porch's attitude is.......I'm always right, and everyone else is wrong. He struggles with low self-esteem and feelings of inadequacy. Unable to admit when he is wrong, he often declines to address the truth on any topic and usually attacks others with empty rhetoric and false accusations. He is indeed alone, at least in the sense that he if far more diluted than most of the radicals who post here. He is a sad, broken, person who deserves our pity, not our anger.

On a more positive note, Happy Birthday Tom! Not sure I agree with you on everything and I don't care where you live, I hope you have an enjoyable birthday!
