25 years ago: Lawrence rep to promote women’s pay equity

The Soviet Defense Ministry announced it was putting new long-range cruise missiles in strategic bombers and submarines, saying the program would “correspond” in scope to U.S. deployment of air- and sea-launched missiles. Washington officials had predicted the move and did not seem immediately alarmed.

Lawrence State Rep. Jessie Branson said she intended to bring the issue of pay equity for women into greater prominence on the legislative calendar in the coming year. Gov. John Carlin had called for a study of the pay situation in state departments.

The county commission continued to have some contentious issues about equipment purchases and personnel management in the aftermath of the firing of Mike Dooley as county works director. Frank Hempen was the successor.

Kansas sportsmen needed to become actively involved in the legislative process to ensure more fairness in wildlife legislation, State Rep. Ron Fox, R-Prairie Village, told Kansas Wildlife Federation members at a meeting in Lawrence.
