Take a chance on romance

Fall fashion from Ralph Lauren, shown Feb. 20 in New York City.

It is a windy, twirling day today, and I have soft, extravagant velvets, suedes and cashmeres on my mind. Fabulously frilly stockings and woolen tights, rose-gold necklaces and tweed coats … Cozy up with the soft, romantic colors of fall, plush fabrics and Renaissance-inspired lace and luxe.

Colors:

Whimsical pastels mixed with realistic neutrals make for an effeminate fall color palette. Consider patterned tweeds, light-tan shoes and belts, pale-pink or mauve tops and smooth grey trousers.

Jewelry:

Romantically inspired jewelry is classic with girlish, fairytale touches. Rose gold chains hold amethyst pendants; oversized bows weave in and out of glittering crystals, serving either as the chain or as an additional detail. Classic gems, like opals, rhodolites and sapphires comprise simple, studded earrings. Also, wear floral scarves and bows as belts.

Jackets and sweaters:

Plush velvet blazers in deep reds, blacks, royal blues and navys will kick any pair of pants up a notch. Layer soft cottons and cashmere-blended knits underneath, and especially look for lace, ruffles and pearls attached for additional accoutrement.

Trousers and Slacks:

Wool trousers, flowing, silk pants and bulky, layered skirts are the perfect bottom for such over-the-top romance. Still, don’t forget about your stockings. Crème socks, sparkly-white tights and embroidered thigh-highs complete your look.

More Romance:

Add accessories and ideas like suede handbags, leather gloves, satin, ruffles, ruched fabric, classy lace, elegant fur, minimal make-up, rosy cheeks, sleek, sophisticated hair and flower-embellished accessories.
