Mangino: Reesing should be a part of Heisman discussion

Kansas coach Mark Mangino isn't one who usually advocates for personal awards for his players.

That changed a bit on Monday when Mangino was asked about his quarterback Todd Reesing.

"We've only played five games, but he certainly — and this is an opinion — he certainly merits the right to be a part of the Heisman (Trophy) conversation," Mangino said during the Big 12 coaches teleconference. "When you look at him statistically, you're impressed, but I think the true way you judge Todd Reesing is you have to see him play.

"If you watch him play, the way he just has great leadership, the way he's in control, the way he can take what looks to be a minus-yardage play and turn it into a gain or a big gain, the real appreciation you have for Todd Reesing is after you watch him play. It's not fair to just look at his statistics."

Reesing is tied for fifth nationally with 315.8 passing yards per game. In five games, he has thrown for 1,579 yards and 13 touchdowns with three interceptions.

"I've kept my word. We're not having any Heisman campaigns, and we're not going to do any of that," Mangino said, "but I think when you watch him play, whether you're an opposing coach, an opposing fan, a broadcaster or a journalist that covers the game, you walk away saying, 'That's kid's a pretty doggone good football player.'"

People will realize next year how much Reesing has done for our football program.

No way Jimmy Clausen wins the Heisman at this point in the season.

The front runners for the Heisman trophy have to be Tim Tebow, Colt McCoy and a long shot is Jacory Harris. I am as big a Jayhawk fan as the next guy posting on here but lets talk about Todd's heisman chances after the upcoming games.

Chicago, if you have any left I'll take whatever you're smoking and or drinking. Ha. I'm assuming he was being very, very sarcastic.

Reesing would be a legit Heisman contender if KU had a better defense so the point spreads would be higher and Reesing could spend even more time on the field piling up the points.

If wishes were horses then beggars would ride.

They talked about Reesing on ESPN radio, how he gets lost in the shuffle. Mel Kiper did point out they played 5 bad teams, and let's see how well he plays OU and Texas.

Didn't Obama already win the Heisman?

stuckinthemiddle 8 years, 7 months ago

Obama is the kind of guy that if he had chosen football instead of law school and politics he very well might have won the Heisman...

the man sets personal goals and achieves them...

guys like Obama make posting in comment sections like this even less significant than they might seem...

stuckinthemiddle 8 years, 7 months ago

by the way... Reesing is as good a college football player as anyone I've seen so far this year...

stuckinthemiddle 8 years, 7 months ago

TOB - Suh is amazing... I've seen none better... he is the most dominating defensive player I've seen this year...

stuckinthemiddle 8 years, 7 months ago

TOB - yeah... guys that big aren't suppose to be that fast... very scary stuff...

KU would be in the top10 if KUAC spent $1 million on a Heisman campaign. Look at what spending $$ did for Oregon's program when they purchased the Joey Harrington window wrap in NYC. After all, it told all the east coast pundits that Oregon was legit with a legit QB. Why wouldn't KU invest in the program behind the BIGGEST star in our history? Todd, you are special and what you accomplished in 2007 was worthy of an invite to NY. What you have started in 2009 is worthy of holding that trophy. Go on the road and dispose of that smelly buffalo, then come home and make National Headlines by dropping 8 TDs ('07 Nebraska-style) on Oklahoma . . . then pray your defense plays well on the road @ KSU and @TT. By the time KU is #4 in the polls and you knock off Nebraska and the Big 12 north title, your invite will be sealed. Beat Colt @ Austin and the trophy is yours . . . Beat Mizzou and win the Big 12 title outright and I will name my kids after you . . . Win a National Title and I will have Tiesto play your birthday party in the city of your choice and pay to have your friends and your team fly with you. KEEP IT UP! YOU ARE THE MAN!

It is hard to compare Reesing with Clausen. Believe me I appreciate the skills of both players. Todd Reesing has meant so much to the renewal of Kansas football. Reesing came into Kansas with little hype and Clausen came to Notre Dame and was expected to be the great quarterback. One was barely recruited by Division 1 schools, the other was recruited by most every major program in the country. Both good quarterbacks, different styles of qurterback and very different competition up to this point this year.

Their stats are very similar but different levels of competition. If Todd can do well against Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, Nebraska and Missouri he will definitely be in the Heisman chase.

Kansas has played Northern Colorado, UTEP, Duke, Southern Miss, and Iowa State.

Notre Dame has played Nevada, Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue and Washington

Todd is a great player but dont forget Kerry Meier who is just as good as an athlete!

"Everyone knows Jimmy Clausen will win Heisman, Notre Dame will shut out USC this week, and win the BCS championship."

Notre Dame doesn't need to shut out USC. All they need to do is win 7 or so games and they get the special "Notre Dame" bid for the championship.

You know why Reesing is not part of the Heisman conversation? That's right, "Dollar $igns!"

1) Most humorous set of comments in years. Well played, gents (and ladies?).

2) I'm not sure Kale Pick will be much of a let down. 2010 Kale may be < 2009 Todd, but definitely >2007 Todd.

3) As good as #5 is he'd be average without #10.

4) Lets hope we're still talking like this in a few weeks after the rest of the murderous conference schedule. BEAT TEXAS TWICE.

What TOB said, but Suh ain't no offensive star and defensive linemen are ineligible for the award. Neither are QB's from a non-traditional FB powerhouse. Therefore, as I've said many times, the Hypesman is a fraud and a waste of time. Just screw it, gol-dang arm stuck out and all. It's about as relevant as the Miss USA pageant. Gag, choke, vomit.

riverdrifter 8 years, 7 months ago

Afterthought. Well, the Miss USA ladies, make no mistake, they, uh, don't make me sick, far from it. But you know whut ah mean. Lay off, Multi.
