Eclectic European antiques evoke French Country style

Visitors to the Lawrence home of Gail and Kevan Vick might mistakenly believe they’ve been transported across the pond, no passports required.

European influences abound. A distinct French Country style throughout is accented by an eclectic mix of European antiques and personal mementos.

“Both Kevan and I were drawn to the French Country style. We like the aesthetics of it; it was a look that just appealed to me,” Gail Vick says in describing her fondness for the distinct design of the home’s furnishings.

Vick, who admits to carrying a measuring tape in her purse at all times, gathers her treasures from a variety of sources, including the Webster House in Kansas City, Mo., Nell Hills in Atchison, trips abroad and even online.

A Bombay chest dating from the 1700s is located near the grand piano in the music room. It’s complemented by toile-matted sheet music from the couple’s wedding.

The focal point of the foyer, a massive, weathered old church window, is artistically perched on an easel and mounted to the wall.

A recently added “keeping room” hearkens back to another era with its copper sink, wide-planked ceiling and limestone floors, yet accommodates a modern need for expanded entertaining space.

“Home and Away” premieres at 6:30 p.m. Mondays on Sunflower Broadband Channel 6 and replays throughout the week.
