25 years ago: Downtown shopping mall proposed

A bomb claimed by the IRA exploded at a Brighton hotel where British prime minister Margaret Thatcher was staying but she was unhurt. However, at least four were killed and 30 injured, officials said.

U.S. wholesale prices, down two months running, fell 0.2 percent in September. It was the sharpest drop since January 1983 and marked the first time in eight years that prices fell for two straight months. LIttle impact was noted in Lawrence.

Another effort to develop a shopping mall in Lawrence — this one anchored by one large department store near city hall at the downtown’s northern end — was being proposed by Steve Clark, a local developer. The cost was estimated to run $10 million.

Plans for an $860,000 ambulatory surgical unit and educational facility at Lawrence Memorial Hospital failed to meet all criteria in a formal cerfificate-of-need application. A public hearing was planned to determine what steps to take.

The Larry and Janet Schaake family was announced as the selection for the 1984 Douglas County 4-H Family of the Year award. The Schaakes had four children and the family members had been involved in 4-H for a collective total of 70 years.
