100 years ago: Livery man struck by horse

From the Lawrence Daily World for Oct. 12, 1909: Chris Hunsinger, the well-known local livery man, was kicked over the eye by a horse last evening and a very severe wound was inflicted. He was harnessing the horse when the blow was struck. . . . Mrs. Bullock, the mother of Ross Bullock, who shot officer Pringle last night and robbed the Eudora bank, is at the Wilson boarding house here, completely prostrated over the crime with which the son is charged. The son, 18, has a record of crime as a desperado but the mother keeps saying “it can’t be, it can’t be.” Her son is still at large and a very dangerous person. The officer is still alive but there is very little hope he will survive. About $1,000 was taken from the bank. . . . One of the largest real estate deals made in Lawrence in a long time was closed today when the McQuary & McNeill Investment Co. bought from the Hosford Investment Co. the entire Fair Grounds Addition. More than $5,000 is involved. . . . S.H. Kress and Co. will open a store in Lawrence this week. Small profits and quick sales is the motto and the public is eagerly awaiting the new store.
