Texas fights off pesky Colorado

No. 2 Texas 38, Colorado 14

Austin, Texas — First came the boos. Then came the chants of “Beat OU!”

In between, Texas turned a stagnant effort against Colorado into a victory Saturday night to stay undefeated going into the annual grudge match against No. 19 Oklahoma.

Earl Thomas returned an interception 92 yards for a touchdown, and Ben Wells recovered a blocked punt for another score to help the Longhorns (5-0, 2-0 Big 12) pull away in the second half.

Jordan Shipley added a punt return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. He also caught a 39-yard touchdown pass in the first half and finished with 147 yards on 11 receptions.

“It was a tough game and a physical game and one we really needed going into next week,” Texas coach Mack Brown said.

It wasn’t exactly a confidence booster with the Sooners up Saturday in Dallas.

Colorado (1-4, 0-1), which managed just 127 total yards, led, 14-3, in the first half. The Buffaloes blocked a field goal, forced two turnovers by Colt McCoy and held the Longhorns to 313 yards, their lowest output of the season and 200 yards below their average.

Colorado quarterback Cody Hawkins, who was 6-of-18 passing for 68 yards with two interceptions, was pulled for sophomore Tyler Hansen. After the game, Colorado coach Dan Hawkins, Cody’s father, announced that Hansen would be the Buffaloes’ starter.

“(Hansen) is such a trooper, and we’re just gonna go with him,” Dan Hawkins said.

No. 15 Oklahoma State 36, Texas A&M 31

College Station, Texas — Zac Robinson threw two touchdown passes, and Oklahoma State overcame the absence of their top two playmakers to beat Texas A&M.

The Cowboys (4-1, 1-0 Big 12) played without All-America receiver Dez Bryant, who was ruled ineligible by the school this week for lying to the NCAA about contact he made with a former NFL player. Oklahoma State was also missing Kendall Hunter, who sat out due to an ankle injury.

Robinson completed 14 of 25 passes for 279 yards, Keith Toston ran for 130 yards, and the Cowboys won at Kyle Field for only the second time since 1983.

No. 19 Oklahoma 33, Baylor 7

Norman, Okla. — Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford threw for 389 yards and a touchdown in his return from a shoulder injury, and Chris Brown had two short scoring runs from one and four yards out in the second quarter.

Bradford broke former Heisman runner-up Josh Heupel’s school record with the 14th game of his career with at least 300 yards passing, and he could have had even bigger numbers if the Sooners’ receivers didn’t have trouble handling his passes.

Bradford had a career-high 22 incompletions, but at least six of those came on drops. A few other passes also hit off receivers’ hands.

Texas Tech 66, Kansas State 14

Lubbock, Texas — Steven Sheffield threw for 490 yards and seven touchdown passes in his first career start to help Texas Tech blast Kansas State.

The Red Raiders backup quarterback was 33-for-41 and finished with TD passes of 52, 6, 4, 72, 28, 12 and 25 yards to five receivers.

It was the second time this season that a Texas Tech quarterback notched seven passing touchdowns. Taylor Potts, out with a concussion this week, threw seven in a 55-10 victory over Rice.

Texas Tech put the game out of reach by halftime. The Wildcats got into Texas Tech territory only once in the first half and punted five times.
