Haskell football meets Wesleyan

He began the football season as a starting cornerback. Then Tarell Ramsey was switched to wide receiver.

Now Ramsey has a new role for Haskell Indian Nations University. He’s the Fightin’ Indians’ back-up quarterback.

Ramsey, a 5-10, 180-pound sophomore, will open at wide receiver against Kansas Wesleyan today, but may have to be pressed into duty if starter Victor Ramos goes down.

Kickoff will be at 2 p.m. at Haskell Stadium.

Ramsey’s force-feeding at quarterback began soon after Dwayne Butler suffered knee and ankle injuries in Saturday’s 47-14 loss to Westminster.

“He’s actually not a bad passer,” HINU coach Eric Brock said of Ramsey, “but he still needs work learning how to hand off the ball.”

Butler became the second Haskell quarterback to suffer a game-related injury this season. Ryan Alden, who began the season as No. 1, hasn’t played in a month because of a torn shoulder muscle.

Brock hopes to have both Butler and Alden back in early November. In the meantime, Ramos will get the call, with Ramsey in reserve.

Haskell will look for its first home victory today. Although 3-0 on the road, the Indians are 0-3 in Haskell Stadium. Kansas Wesleyan opened with three wins in a row before Bethany ruined the Coyotes’ homecoming with a 27-21 victory Saturday in Salina.

Haskell has another KCAC foe on tap next week when Friends University comes to town. After that, the Indians will have back-to-back open dates before entertaining Southwestern Assemblies of God U. on Nov. 7.
