Kansas State University has announced area students who earned degrees this summer. Summer 2009 graduates had the option to participate in K-State’s May 2009 commencement ceremony, or they can participate in fall commencement ceremonies Dec. 11-12.

Area graduates earning bachelor’s degrees are Kendal Mckinley, family studies human services, Basehor; Kirsten Schmidt, business administration, Lawrence; and Whitney Cook, dietetics, Wellsville.

Sarah and Clint Kueffer, Eudora, announce the birth of their son, Lashley Kyle Edward Kueffer, on Sept. 21, 2009, at Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa.

His maternal grandparents are John Payne and Kay Payne, both of Topeka; his paternal grandparents are Steve and Pam Kueffer, Baldwin City.

His great-grandparents are Martina Eberhard, Campbell, Mo., Bob and Lee Wulff, Jackson, Mo.; and Clyde and Betty Dummermuth, Russellville, Mo.

John Studdard, of Lawrence, participated as a Douglas County member of the annual Kansas Silver Haired Legislature Sept. 29-Oct. 1 at the Ramada Hotel and Convention Center in Topeka.

The Silver-Haired Legislature is composed of individuals 60 years or older who were elected by peers to develop bills and resolutions that are of interest to their peers and families.

The annual Flory reunion was Sept. 20 at Lone Star Church of the Brethen. Terry Schaplowsky of Lawrence was named the K-State Research and Extension Unclassified Employee of the Year by Kansas State University.

Schaplowsky, who is the operations supervisor for K-State’s Horticulture Research Center in Olathe, will be honored with an Oct. 20 luncheon in Manhattan. He also works as the center’s safety and environmental coordinator. Schaplowsky has worked for K-State since 1980.

In addition to the work at the center, the award takes into account service in one’s community. Schaplowsky has been a volunteer firefighter, a Cub Scout den leader and assistant den leader.

Bethel College, North Newton, announces area recipients of academic scholarships for the 2009-10 school year who are currently first-time freshmen at the college.

Brandan Downs, Overbrook, has been awarded the Bethel Scholar Academic Scholarship. The scholarship is valued at $17,600 over a four-year period. Downs is a graduate of Santa Fe Trail High School and the son of Franklin Downs and Julia Downs.

Benjamin Preheim, Lawrence, has been awarded the Merit Academic Scholarship. The scholarship is valued at $12,800 over a four-year period. Preheim is a graduate of Lawrence High School and the son of Barbara and Joseph Preheim.

Wichita State University has announced area students who completed their degrees this summer. Students must have a cumulative grade-point average equal to or greater than 3.90 for summa cum laude; 3.55 for magna cum laude; and 3.25 for cum laude.

Area students earning bachelor’s degrees are Jamie Stanclift, sport management, cum laude, Lawrence.

Area students earning master’s degrees are Lindsey Shellenberger, physician assistant, Eudora.
