Trash truck helps stifle leap from bridge

? Shawnee police say it was fortunate that a garbage truck was in the area when a 17-year-old boy tried to jump from a bridge.

According to area media reports, a Shawnee officer saw the boy around 9 a.m. Thursday pacing on a bridge over Shawnee Mission Parkway.

The officer grabbed the boy’s arm as he jumped, then held him there while waiting for help.

While the boy’s feet dangled from the bridge, officers radioed for a fire truck before noticing that a large, box-shaped garbage truck was stopped below because of the incident.

The truck was moved beneath the boy and he was lowered to the top of it.

The teen was taken to a mental health center for evaluation.
