The Kansas Department of Transportation is moving forward with plans to install sidewalks and related equipment near schools in Baldwin City.

Mega Industries Corp., of Kansas City, Mo., is expected to start work on the $155,673 construction job at the end of October or in early November, said Becky Pepper, KDOT’s bicycle and pedestrian coordinator.

Work will focus on Sixth, Ames, Wesley and Eighth streets, and on Crimson Avenue, she said. New curb ramps also will be installed, along with flashing school beacons on Sixth Street, on both sides of FireTree Avenue.

The work is part of KDOT’s Safe Routes to School program. The department pays for 100 percent of the project’s construction costs.

KDOT also has set aside $15,000 to be used on “non-infrastructure” activities that could include bike rodeos, a “frequent walker” club and creation of a walking school bus, Pepper said.
