25 years ago: Airport design approved

The Lawrence city commission expressed pleasure over the new Lawrence Municipal Airport terminal design and gave approval for the go-ahead on the $567,421 project. It was a 4,500-square-foot structure with new parking areas and access to other parts of the airport.

The city commission laid the groundwork for the increase in building permits fees, some due to more than double, despite protests from builders. The added money was to go for operation of the underfunded building inspection department.

School board members were not happy with the news about the lags in construction for District 497 projects. Six elementary schools were involved and there not only delays but the quality of the work in some cases had not been acceptable. Delays were leading to crowding in some classes.
