Pedestrian injured in accident on Sixth Street

Sixth Street traffic was reduced to one lane each way during part of the lunch hour Thursday after a vehicle-pedestrian accident near Sixth and Colorado streets.

An 84-year-old Lawrence man was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital, but his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, said Sgt. Michael Monroe, a Lawrence police spokesman. The accident occurred at 12:10 p.m.

Monroe said an 82-year-old Lawrence man was driving east on Sixth Street and struck the man.

Lawrence resident Karen Lyerla, who was driving east on Sixth Street, said an older man was walking across the street when a driver in front of her slammed on his brakes, unable to avoid the pedestrian.

“I’m thinking (the driver) did everything he could,” Lyerla said.

There is no crosswalk in the area of the accident, which is east of Sixth and Iowa streets. Monroe said officers issued a the pedestrian a citation because he tried to cross the street there.
