25 years ago: Editors predict big win by Reagan

Editors and publishers at Kansas University for the annual Editor’s Day events said they saw little hope that Democrat Walter Mondale would upset President Ronald Reagan in the presidential election. A number said that Reagan would win “by a big, big margin.”

Dean Weller’s DeSoto garage was a gathering place for old car enthusiasts and he was a center of attention at the 12th annual show of the Lawrence Region Antique Automobile Club of America. An old police paddy wagon was a big attraction.

Astronaut Sally Ride secured a balky antenna with the shuttle Challenger’s robot arm and teamed with Kathy Sullivan to yank a cable from the ship’s electronic bay to lock a second antenna into place. Both women were playing key roles with the seven-member crew.

A survey showed that local teachers had a high regard for the school system in which they worked in Lawrence and nobody assigned any F-grades to any category. Officials were pleased with the teacher approach.

After 36 years, the Lawrence Cooperative Community Nursery School at 645 Ala. was moving along as well as always in the effort to bring children of all colors and their parents into a community project.
