Watson leads at Players
If Tom Watson was looking for a sign that luck was on his side at the Senior Players Championship, he got it on the 13th hole at the Baltimore Country Club.
Seeking his second birdie on what would turn out to be a bogey-free round, Watson let loose a 50-foot downhill putt. Bottom of the cup.
“I was just trying to get close, cozy it down there, and it went in the hole,” he said. “It was a nice surprise.”
Watson shot a 68 on a windy Friday for a 6-under 134 at the midway point of the fifth major on the Champions Tour. Seeking his first win of the year, Watson leads four players by two strokes.
Craig Stadler shot a 65 for a 136, tied with Bob Tway (68), Jay Haas (70) and Mark Wiebe (67).
Bernhard Langer sank six birdies for a 65 to come in at 137, along with Loren Roberts (67) and John Cook (68).
GOLF
Woods surpasses $1 billion
New York — Forbes says Tiger Woods has become the first athlete to surpass $1 billion in career earnings. The magazine estimates that golf’s top-ranked player crested the plateau when he earned $10 million for winning the FedEx Cup on Sunday.
Norman, Evert separate
Just 15 months after they were married, golf star Greg Norman and tennis great Chris Evert announced they have separated. The announcement Friday comes three days before Norman is to captain the International team at the Presidents Cup in San Francisco, where wives of the captains take on a visible role. Norman and Evert, each in the Hall of Fame in their respective sports, did not say whether they planned to divorce.
Thompson, Ochoa tied
Prattville, Ala. — Ninth-grader Alexis Thompson shot a 3-under 69 on Friday for a share of the lead with top-ranked Lorena Ochoa and three others after the second round of the Navistar LPGA Classic. Ochoa (68), Laura Davies (65), Yani Tseng (63) and Giulia Sergas (65) matched Thompson at 10-under 134.
Taylor tops Turning Stone
Verona, N.Y. — Vaughn Taylor shot his second straight 5-under 67 to take a one-stroke lead over three players after another cold, wet and somewhat windy day at Turning Stone Resort Championship. Matt Kuchar (68), rookie Leif Olson (69) and Nicholas Thompson (67), whose 14-year-old sister, Alexis, was tied for the second-round lead at the Navistar LPGA Classic in Alabama, were tied for second on the Atunyote Golf Club course.
McIlroy shares lead
St. Andrews, Scotland — Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy birdied the last two holes on the Old Course at St. Andrews for a 7-under 65 and a share of the second-round lead in the Dunhill Links Championship. McIlroy was at 11-under 133 along with countryman Michael Hoey and Scotland’s Richie Ramsay.

Hawaii loses quarterback
Honolulu — Hawaii quarterback Greg Alexander will miss the rest of the season after injuring his left knee Wednesday night in a loss at Louisiana Tech, school officials said Friday.
The 6-foot-3, 230-pound senior will have surgery today to repair “major ligament damage,” leaving the pass-heavy Warriors with virtually no game experience at the quarterback position.
Alexander had gotten off to a fast start this season, throwing for 1,433 yards, nine touchdowns with four interceptions.

Notre Dame loses forward
South Bend, Ind. — Notre Dame forward Scott Martin, expected to start for the Fighting Irish, will miss the upcoming season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Martin underwent an MRI Friday, a day after injuring his knee during a preseason workout.
BASEBALL
Mistreatment alleged
Phoenix — A new book by a former employee of Alcor, the company that froze Ted Williams’ remains, alleges the baseball Hall of Famer’s body was mistreated by the company.
Larry Johnson says in the book “Frozen” that he watched an Alcor official swing a monkey wrench at Williams’ frozen severed head to try to remove a tuna can stuck to it. The first swing accidentally struck the head dead-on, Johnson contends, and the second knocked the tuna can loose.
Alcor Life Extension Foundation, based in Scottsdale, Ariz., issued a statement on its Web site denying the allegations and promising litigation.
Bonderman suspended
New York — Detroit Tigers pitcher Jeremy Bonderman has been suspended for three games for intentionally hitting Minnesota’s Delmon Young on a knee with a pitch.

Arrest in Andrews case
Los Angeles — The FBI says it has arrested a Chicago-area man who is accused of taking surreptitious nude videos of ESPN reporter Erin Andrews in a hotel room. The bureau says in a statement that 48-year-old Michael Barrett of Westmont, Ill., was arrested at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport on Friday night.

Celtics’ Walker has surgery
Boston — Boston Celtics forward Bill Walker underwent successful right knee arthroscopic surgery. The surgery Friday at the New England Baptist Hospital was aimed at repairing a meniscus tear Walker suffered on the first day of training camp. The team said no timetable has been set for his return. Walker also had surgery on the knee last year.
The second-year player out of Kansas State averaged three points in 29 games last year with the Celtics.
