Veritas upends St. John’s, 42-6

? After averaging nearly 70 points a game in opening the season with four straight victories, Veritas Christian School football coach Doug Bennett worried a bit the Eagles wouldn’t know how to react to a close game when they hit the road to face St. John’s Military.

“We were a little concerned about that,” Bennett said. “But we were more worried about the matchup. We’re not real large, and they had some big boys — 6-(foot)5, 295 pounds. They had several guys in the mid-230 range.”

And Veritas?

“We don’t have anybody,” Bennett said with a laugh, “that starts with a ‘2.’”

No matter.

The smaller Eagles beat St. John’s, 42-6, on Friday.

“It was definitely the toughest team we’ve faced all season,” Bennett said. “They were a big, physical, hard-hitting team, but we executed extremely well. We had a well laid-out game plan, and the kids executed to perfection on both sides of the ball.”

Preston Randall had 10 carries for 102 yards, Ethan Scott had 14 carries for 89 yards, Nate Scott had nine carries for 52 yards, and Hogan Randall rushed 10 times for 25 yards.

Ethan Scott rushed for a TD, threw three more and returned an interception 30 yards for another score. He was 7-for-10 for 53 yards passing. Preston Randall rushed for a touchdown and caught at TD pass, Nate Scott caught a touchdown, and so did Ethan Kay.

Defensively, Hogan Randall had 19 tackles, three for losses, and Ethan Scott made 11 stops.

St. John’s scored its only touchdown three seconds before halftime.

“If not for that,” Bennett said, “we could have had a shutout.”

Veritas (5-0) will play host to Topeka Cair Paravel on Friday.
