It’s been years in the making, but Immanuel Lutheran Church and University Student Center will finally be dedicating its new building extension at 12:15 p.m. Sunday at the church, 2104 Bob Billings Parkway.

Sunday’s dedication will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a meal and a special dedication worship service.

Ideas for the addition extension, called the activity center, began years ago, with an official ground breaking April 27, 2008. Construction on the 8,522-square-foot addition began the following June and was completed and first began to be occupied a year later.

The facility includes a large multi-purpose gym, a “warming” kitchen, a classroom and an unfinished area split between a youth group meeting room and storage.

Jack Landgrebe, an Immanuel member since 1962, is the church’s building committee chairman. He says the facility was needed, as many of the church’s activities had been cramped between its original building and a three-story home, called the friendship center, that had occupied the spot on the north side of the church where the extension now sits.

The total construction cost for the building was $1.26 million. Landgrebe says it may seem like a lot, but the church was able to cut costs by doing some of the painting and cabinetry installation itself using members’ donated time. And of course, monetary donations have also been instrumental, as the church’s pledge campaign has brought in $779,410 since 2007.
