KU police reviewing football-basketball fight tapes

Police are investigating surveillance video showing a fight between KU's football and basketball teams. Enlarge video

Kansas University police now are associating two crimes with a public fight that broke out between members of the football and men’s basketball teams.

Officers have opened a disorderly conduct investigation into last week’s melee outside Burge Union, KU Public Safety Office Maj. Chris Keary said Thursday. Initially, police said the incident — which involved as many as 100 people — was not being investigated as a crime.

Less than an hour after the fight, police said, a man threatened to shoot a woman in a parking lot outside the nearby Jayhawker Towers, an on-campus apartment complex which is home to many student athletes. That crime has now also been linked by police to the Sept. 22 brawl.

“There was some relationship between what was going on at the Towers,” Keary said. “We do believe they were connected.”

Surveillance video obtained by 6News and the Lawrence Journal-World shows dozens of people in the parking lot of the union at the time of the fight, though individual team members cannot be identified.

After the melee — which occurred about 6:30 p.m. and left KU basketball player Tyshawn Taylor with a dislocated thumb — the crowd is seen scattering, just before a police vehicle shows up with its lights on. No arrests have been made, or citations issued, in the case, police and the city prosecutor’s office said.

According to police reports, the dispute apparently spilled across the street to the Towers’ parking lot.

Guy Lipscomb, 19, was arrested and later charged with two counts of criminal threat for allegedly threatening a current and a former track athlete, court documents state.

Lipscomb, who is not a student at KU, was released from Douglas County Jail on $3,000 bond. On Tuesday, his case was set for an Oct. 20 preliminary hearing, court records state.

The female victims of the criminal threat also were associated with a July 25 battery report at Jayhawker Towers, according to police reports.

One of the women was the victim of the battery and received minor injuries. The other witnessed the incident.

Police cited Andrea Johnson, 25, for a charge of misdemeanor battery in that case. She was granted a diversion on Sept. 15 in Lawrence Municipal Court and has been fined $300, the city prosecutor’s office said Thursday.

Miami Heat basketball player Mario Chalmers, a former KU basketball star, was listed as another witness to the incident. It occurred while Chalmers was in town for a golf fundraiser at Alvamar Country Club. Chalmers and Johnson are parents of a child, according to court records.

This article is confusing! So the battery of Mario Chalmer's Baby Mama potentially led to the fight between current football and basketball players? Was she the woman they were all fighting over? She must really be something!

0

walter_sobchak 4 years, 10 months ago

This is the most disjointed & incoherent article in the history of the printed word.

0

Steve Miller 4 years, 10 months ago

Dudes, it is supposed to be this way, have you all not heard of diversion... eventually your attention will be on other issues and not the one at hand, atheletes fighting publically with no consequences... they got you coming and going.

0

trvlronda 4 years, 10 months ago

what? Chalmers has baby mama drama? Why aren't condoms given out at the same time as the Adidas shoes and athletic wear. Off court drama should not be tolerated. The teams need to understand that they should be and need to be a cut above the rest, perhaps they need some additional training by the university ambassador follks.

the towers have always been pretty ghetto.

0

vinividivici 4 years, 10 months ago

actually yall dont know the story at all and the 25 year old was not hanging out at the towers so before you wanna call people jersey chasers why dont you get the story straight! truth is they best friends that had a baby so try again! and no they were not fighting over Chalmer's baby mama! It was another young woman...so dont feel sympathy for the child he WELL taken care of and has a WONDERFUL mom!

0

woodenfleaeater 4 years, 10 months ago

vinividivici, could you please explain, in English, what that means, or would / could someone translate for me please?

0

Mel Briscoe 4 years, 10 months ago

co-sign wooden and santini. vin, if you're going to post on a newspaper website, perhaps try and communicate on a little higher of a level than you would on facebook or myspace. seriously. makes you sound like the jerry springeresque goings-on you described in your post and are apparently trying to distance yourself from. you basically defeated the purpose of posting if you are going to come across as ghetto but at the same time claim that you and your people aren't.

this is coming from another "young" (well, you're probably alot younger than me), woman of color to another and is not meant in an insulting fashion.

0

vinividivici 4 years, 10 months ago

woman of color? that I am not and it's sad that you assume that honeychild. And I probably could have wrote that in a more mature way, however I was referring to the way previous users were referring to Andrea. I don't appreciate people calling young women they do not know anything about "jersey chasers" especially when referring to a child's mother. She was not the young woman that the teams were fighting over, that young woman should be called a jersey chaser as she has been messing with not only one team but multiple members on both teams. I would just appreciate if people would get the full story before trying to assume things and speaking badly on someones parenting and and there role as a parent when they don't know anything about the situation.

The only difference is, the bums downtown can't dunk. If these guys couldn't play basketball, they'd be serving you fries at McDonalds and bagging groceries.

Sorry, but until we actually get some facts, speculation will run wild.

Maybe if the people you're talking about don't want to be talked about, they shouldn't be involved in 100-person public fights with some of the most high profile people in town.

0

blessednfavored 4 years, 10 months ago

I might add that this artilce is quite confusing and misleading as well. Andrea had nothing to do with the incident involving the football players and the basketball players, the young woman that started that incident was involved in the fight with Andrea on July 25th. Therefore, all the comment on Andrea being a Jersey chaser and hanging out at the towers are irrevelant nor true. I know Andrea and she is an excellent mother to her and Mario's son as he is a great father. Its always easy for someone to make assumptions about something they have no knowledge of, but regardless of how Vin stated it...I thank her for putting that out there.

0

Mel Briscoe 4 years, 10 months ago

LMAO @ shelter dude!! :D that was a good one! LOL

0

Mel Briscoe 4 years, 10 months ago

blessed, i wasn't even aware of his mario chalmer's friend/girlfriend as being termed a "jersey chaser". must've missed that one (sometimes i do miss portions of articles because i read too fast)... that's why vin kind of came out of left field w/ that one.

glad you chimed in though. :)

0

vinividivici 4 years, 10 months ago

Andrea wasnt involved in that fight, nor was she even anywhere near that area! That's why i'm upset. the July 25th incident had nothing to do with the brawl other than the jersey chaser that caused both problems...it was NOT Andrea

0

Steve Jacob 4 years, 10 months ago

I don't see the link between Andrea Johnson and the fights, but don't paint her as a victim. When your 25 with a kid or kids, you should not be getting misdemeanors.

0

KCMO_Jayhawk 4 years, 10 months ago

This article is a display of poor journalism! I am confused and the ending of the article appeared to just be shooting off random facts!! Thanks for nothing LJWorld...looks like they were digging for useless information!

Return to television reporting or take some journalism classes. I had to read this at least three times and it's still confusing.

0

Mel Briscoe 4 years, 10 months ago

LMAO, autie-- i swear, y'all have jokes up in here today! its making my friday go by faster though. :)

0

Mel Briscoe 4 years, 10 months ago

the thing that's slightly ironic (and i use the qualifier "slightly" because i maybe misusing the word ironic...) is that, by bringing up andrea's name in the comments section of this piece, both vin and blessed brought to attention the name of a young lady of whom the majority of us were clueless. apparently most of us didn't know about the whole "mario's baby mama" situation until it was put on blast by miss vin. that whole scenario and andrea's name would've completely flown below the radar for myself, and probably most of the posters in this thread, had it not been for someone else putting her in the spotlight.

0

Ricky_Vaughn 4 years, 10 months ago

Exactly honeychild!

I didn't even know Mario had a kid or a woman named Andrea. Vin's doing a better job covering this story than the LJW! Sign her up!

0

blessednfavored 4 years, 10 months ago

@ srj....I don't think anyone is painting Andrea as a victim, just advising ppl of facts. No,getting misdemeanors is not the best thing, but you must remember no one is perfect. The fact that she has a child, does that make her any less of a good mother or effect the way that she takes care of her child ? She had a lapse of judgement but who doesn't at some point in their life?....A MISTAKE made and you learn from it.

0

Mel Briscoe 4 years, 10 months ago

i wonder if andrea herself would appreciate folks speaking on her behalf in this thread. since you both are apparently such good friends to this young lady, perhaps you should let her know she is being mentioned repeatedly in here and she can defend herself?.... just a thought.

0

estespark 4 years, 10 months ago

The structure and flow of this article is typical of the Capital Journal....

0

KCMO_Jayhawk 4 years, 10 months ago

Personally I think Andrea and Mario Chalmers should jump off in Jesse Fray's behind for putting her and Mario's information in the article! People have kids every day out of wedlock and people also have lapses in judgement everyday! None of us are in a position to judge or formulate an opinion about any person! With the information provided here I fail to see the connection to the events a couple of weeks ago. I also fail to see the connection between the guy arrested, especially since he is not a student of athlete at the University! LOL...this article, right along with the comment thread, is just terrible in so many ways!!!

0

woodenfleaeater 4 years, 10 months ago

blessednfavored says:

"The fact that she has a child, does that make her any less of a good mother or effect the way that she takes care of her child ?"

Yes, when you are fighting in parking lots and getting ticketed instead of being home with your child, that does make you "less of a good mother". But, with the money Chalmers makes, they probably have a nannny. So, she's probably not a mother at all. She probably takes the child when she wants to, and leaves it when she doesn't. That was probably the case here. Left the baby with the nanny, and went out picking fights.

0

zionlady 4 years, 10 months ago

This article seems to have talked about an incident that has nothing to do with the criminal threat that lead to the “sports brawl” that happed recently. I understand that some of the people involved in this incident had reported another incident in July but really what does that have to do with the recent events? To me it seems like the writer wanted to throw in another incident because it involved a former athlete but really the story told about the second event that happened doesn’t give many facts and it seems as if it was just a chance to name drop. It makes me wonder about the people involved in both incidents? Do they go around looking for things to stir up fights with Athletes? To me THAT is what you call a jersey chaser, not a women that has her name put in the paper because a person she had an incident with claims to have had “minor injuries” and wanted to try and make her look like a bad by filing a police report. These people must have nothing better to do!

this andrea character has really been raked over the proverbial coals in this thread... i re-read the article and finally noticed the little blurb at the end in which her name was mentioned. i will admit, it seemed a tad out of context and probably could've been left out of the article entirely.

thanks to vin, we now know that mario chalmer's baby mama is not a "jersey chaser" and that she is, indeed, a good parent. blessed nailed this fact in even more. and then there's kcmo_jayhawk who seems to make a really good point about journalistic integrity but at the same time is coming across as a bit beligerent.

sooo... i personally know people who attend KState, cloud county comm college, KS wesleyan, WSU, butler county comm college, brown-mackie college and hutchinson comm college... now that i know this dirt on mario chalmer's baby mama i can spread it like wildfire and REALLY get the rumor mill going, all across the state of KS, for people who don't even know about the lawrence journal-world. let's really put andrea on blast-- i can include the portions that were implied about her being a stripper and having a history of fighting. yakkity yakkity, blah blah blah.

y'all put it out there like that and got all springer'ish with it. let's run it up the rumor mill flagpole and see how high it flies.

Even though this article did not answer any questions and seemed to just bring up more drama...I am happy that I have now been able to see what a woman looks like that can start a bunch of problems for our two main sports teams. Holy cow...her Facebook pic is a doozy!

As for Andrea, I think that she was unfairly mentioned in this article since it was about the brawl between the teams and it now turns out that her own situation just had to deal the girl they were all fighting for. I think the motive was to just get the info out that Chalmers has a love child.

0

Mel Briscoe 4 years, 10 months ago

i agree, kmcd. like i said in an earlier post, once i re-read the entire article i saw the snippet at the end about chalmer's girlfriend ("baby mama" or whatever...) and i, too, found that it was an unnecessary tidbit and really could have gone unmentioned.

i could see why andrea's friends would be upset about the mention but they (especially vin) went about it in a "trying to put out a campfire w/ gasoline" sort of way. their intentions were good but we all know what is said to comprise the road to hell.....

Sort of ironic to see the word gravitas used by someone who either doesn't recognize the difference between the words conscious and conscience or just can't spell. Almost as stupefying as an Obama rant in the middle of an article about KU athletes fighting.

By Tully Corcoran Created October 2, 2009 at 12:27pm Updated October 2, 2009 at 3:23pm

LAWRENCE -- University of Kansas Police have opened a criminal investigation in one of last week's fights between KU football and basketball players, assistant chief of police Chris Keary said.

Keary said police had been investigating all three incidents since they happened, but only the first one, which began about 6:30 p.m. Sept. 22 in the parking lot of the Burge Union, is currently being investigated as a crime.

"That investigation led us to consider disorderly conduct," Keary said.

Named in the police report are Kansas basketball players Sherron Collins, Marcus and Markieff Morris, Mario Little, Thomas Robinson and Elijah Johnson, Kansas football assistant coach George Matsakis, basketball assistant Brett Ballard and associate athletic director Sean Lester. All of them are listed on the report as "other," meaning they are not listed as victims, witnesses or reporting parties.

"They're probably people we talked to," Keary said.

Specific to this case, Keary didn't know why those men were listed as they were. He said suspects would not be listed as "other" or named publicly unless they had been arrested.

Police have made an arrest in an incident Keary believed to be connected to the Burge Union fight. Guy Lipscomb, 19, who is not a KU student, was arrested and charged with two counts of criminal threat for his role in an incident Sept. 22 in the Jayhawker Towers parking lot.

The Burge Union fight was one of three between KU football and basketball players last week. The most public altercation happened about 10 a.m. Sept. 23 in front of Wescoe Hall. Police interviewed KU athletes at the time, but have not yet decided to pursue a criminal investigation.

"We're still looking at that one, too," Keary said.

Tully Corcoran can be reached at (785) 295-5652 and tully.corcoran@cjonline.com.

marion: Your comment about a "Team full of Thugs", is I believe close to being "right on". While it is probably unfair to blame the basketball team for all of this mess, it is that group that seems to be getting the attention. The old adage "Smoke and Fire" seems appropriate here.

My concern for the past several years (and maybe coincidental with Self's recruiting) has been the trend to go after Eastern and Midwestern inter-city BB talent. It seems to me when KU recruited players (both white and black) that did not come from that background, the school had less personnel problems. I'm sure someone can shoot this concept down, but there is some truth to it.

0

kujo 4 years, 10 months ago

Wow! How crazy is it that all these comments have been made about this one artical that has nothing to do with the nature at hand. the fact of the matter is a fight accurred between two teams. it's not about Andrea NOR Mario. To "sjr": funny that you can cast judgment upon someone when you know NOTHING about them. I'm sure you've done silly things yourself in your past that just haven't come to light. Don't you all have anything better to do than post comments all day on ljworld? read a book & stop posting silly comments! be blessed!

And now you know why I have no interest in college sports. Certainly there are many actual student athletes but ther are many who are just people I can not respect as this incident illustrates. Lew Perkins is embarressed as he should be. KU fans, you got what you asked for.

RE the Thug Wars, the "victim" is the entire community, which is rendered unsafe by the unchecked violence allowed by KU Police to exist on and around campus. Let me say it again: When there is violence in the community, the community, collectively, is the victim. You don't need someone with a bloody lip to come crying into the precinct house to start an investigation. Biggest culprit in this: KU Police, for refusing to do their job, and for lying to us with a straight face about why they were failing and refusing to do their jobs. I doubt the seriousness of their investigation at this point, because they seem to just be trying to go through the motions and protect their own backsides. KU Police = Owned by Lew
