Winter fashion, fingers forward

The rush of the holiday season seems to encompass December, so be sure to squeeze in some shopping and pampering for yourself before you are caught in a whirlwind! Focus on small, affordable details that can completely transform your look.

Make yourself feel like a million bucks, starting with your hands.

Cocktail rings:

Cocktail rings are lighthearted and festive. I like the glitzy, costume-y versions. I mean, let’s face it, if I’m wearing anything (other than the stud earrings that were a gift from my dad…) it is definitely not real! So pick out a fun ring that is guaranteed to be your go-to holiday accessory, a staple. Sparkling, shining rings instantly glam-up every party outfit. These rings are meant to be worn by women of all ages. Look for unusual, unconventional materials for an individual, personal ring. One of the oversized stones out there will surely suit your fancy. Another quick tip: Look for a unique band shape for something a bit different.

Nail polish:

Holiday parties and cocktail rings are all the more reason to flaunt your fingernails. This fall and winter, flat, matte finishes are the most fashion-forward. Matte finishes are fresh and reminiscent of the runway. Look for dark colors like deep navy, deep purple (borderline black) and deep mauve.

If you don’t care for any of these shades, try a crisp, white nail polish or consider other trendy options like a bold blue, grey or wine-colored shades.

Try color-blocking on your nails for a bit of edge. One current, popular design is the “half-moon” shape. For this look, paint your entire nail one solid shade. After the polish is dry, choose a contrasting color to paint a solid half-circle, painted right at the edge of your cuticle (the flat side of the half-moon should lay against your cuticle).

Gloves:

Gloves are a fun way to add sophistication to a nighttime look. There are many varieties available and in-style now, so have fun and choose a pair that speaks to you The choice of fabric and length can alter your look.

  1. Lace gloves:

Lace gloves are feminine, soft, and sweet. Pair lace gloves with a cocktail dress or evening dress. Normally lace gloves are wrist-length, but this will vary. The color of a lace glove says a lot — black tends to look sophisticated or super-’80s; red is quite sassy; white is purely chic.

  1. Velvet Gloves:

Velvet gloves are soft and sexy. When purchasing an item made from such luxurious fabric, I tend to lean toward more classic colors — black or navy, for example. Long velvet gloves can be paired with gold and silver, glimmering jewelry for over-the-top, celebratory occasions.

  1. Leather gloves:

Gloves made from leather are usually considered a classic look. If you do want a leather glove that will last — look for a more basic pair that hits just past the wrist. This season, leather gloves tend to be longer in length (I’m talking over the elbow, ladies) and tighter in fit. Also, different shades of leather, unique embellishments, studs or cutouts are widely available and add a little flavor to your leather gloves. Check out gloves by Zac Posen or Derek Lam for some ideas. Not a leather fan? Opt for suede for a similar look.

  1. Knit gloves:

Always a fan favorite, the knit glove is typically much more casual than the above options. Fun colors, lengths and shapes are available, from long, thick mittens, to thin, short, fingerless gloves complete with a flap.
