Texas guard Ward lost for season

? Texas guard Varez Ward will miss the rest of the season because of a ruptured quadriceps tendon in his right leg. Team trainer Eric Fry says Ward will have surgery next week.

Ward started the first three games for No. 3 Texas (4-0) before injuring himself in warmups before Tuesday night’s win over Pittsburgh. He averaged 6.7 points and three rebounds and led the team with seven steals.

BASEBALL

White Sox, Jones agree

Chicago — Andruw Jones agreed Wednesday to a $500,000, one-year contract with the Chicago White Sox.

Jones hit .214 with 17 homers and 43 RBIs in 82 games with Texas this year while making 53 starts as the designated hitter, 12 in left field, five in right field and four at first base.

A five-time All-Star who has slumped in recent years, Jones was released by the Los Angeles Dodgers in January and signed with the Rangers the following month.

He agreed to a $36.2 million, two-year contract with Los Angeles in December 2007. Now 32, he can make an additional $1 million in performance bonuses under his agreement with the White Sox.

Jones is a career .257 hitter with 388 homers and 1,174 RBIs. He earned Gold Gloves in his final 10 seasons with Atlanta while playing for the Braves from 1996-07 and has seven seasons of at least 30 homers, including a career-high 51 in 2005. He also has had five 100-RBI seasons.

McDonald stays with Jays

Toronto — Shortstop John McDonald has decided to remain with the Toronto Blue Jays, agreeing to a $3 million, two-year contract. The 35-year-old hit .258 with four homers and 13 RBIs in 151 at-bats last season for Toronto. He made 35 starts, including 19 at shortstop, nine at third, five at second and two in left.

McDonald has spent 11 seasons in the major leagues, the past five with the Blue Jays. He became a free agent after the season.

His deal announced Wednesday includes annual salaries of $1.5 million.

Royals deal Hulett to Bosox

Kansas City, Mo. — The Kansas City Royals have traded infielder Tug Hulett to the Boston Red Sox for cash or a player to be named. The Royals said Wednesday the 26-year-old infielder had been designated for assignment last week.

Hulett was claimed off waivers from Seattle last winter and played in 15 games for Kansas City in 2009, going 2-for-18 at the plate.

Hawkins to learn fate

Boulder, Colo. — Colorado football coach Dan Hawkins is expected to learn more about his future today.

The Camera newspaper reports that athletic director Mike Bohn says an official announcement about the coaching situation will come today.

The newspaper spoke to Bohn in Hawaii after Colorado’s men’s basketball team played there Wednesday. The newspaper said Bohn would not reveal his decision on Hawkins’ future.

Colorado is 3-8 this season, with one game left Friday at home against Nebraska. Hawkins is in his fourth season with the Buffaloes and has a 16-32 record.

Firing him would cost the school more than $3 million.

NFL

Chiefs shelve CB Leggett

Kansas City, Mo. — Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Maurice Leggett is out for the season because of a shoulder injury. Leggett was placed on injured reserve Wednesday. He hurt the shoulder Sunday in the Chiefs’ 27-24 win over Pittsburgh.

Leggett has played in 22 games with the Chiefs, including four starts, since entering the NFL as a rookie free agent last year. He also played safety this season. He’s made 47 tackles and returned an interception 27 yards for a touchdown.

Browns’ coach retracts

Berea, Ohio — Browns coach Eric Mangini says he was frustrated at losing when he suggested the Detroit Lions faked injuries in Sunday’s game.

Mangini had suggested Lions defensive players faked that they were hurt to slow down Cleveland’s no-huddle offense in Detroit’s 38-37 win. Mangini noted that several Lions left the field due to injuries only to return.

Roethlisberger practices

Pittsburgh — Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has practiced despite sustaining a concussion against Kansas City and is expected to play Sunday in Baltimore.

While Roethlisberger went through a usual Wednesday practice, second-year quarterback Dennis Dixon took more snaps than usual. Dixon moved up the depth chart when backup Charlie Batch broke his left wrist during the 27-24 loss to the Chiefs.

The Steelers added a third quarterback by signing former three-year Pitt starter Tyler Palko to their practice squad.

NBA

Kings: Employee gambled

Sacramento, Calif. — The Sacramento Kings said Wednesday they were informed by the NBA that a former employee gambled while on their staff.

Jack Mai, the team’s former assistant director of scouting, was found to have gambled while with the Kings, who fired him in January. Last season was his eighth with the franchise and third as assistant director of scouting.

The Kings said Mai had been disqualified from further association with the NBA and its teams.

Pollin funeral Friday

Washington — The funeral for Washington Wizards owner Abe Pollin will be held Friday. The team said Wednesday that a public memorial service will also be held on Dec. 8 at Pollin’s Verizon Center, the arena that spurred development in a downtrodden area of the city.

Pollin died Tuesday at the age of 85. Team spokesman Matt Williams said Pollin suffered from corticobasal degeneration, a rare brain disease.

Attorneys sue Mayfield

Charlotte, N.C. — Jeremy Mayfield’s former attorneys have filed a civil suit against the suspended NASCAR driver seeking nearly $400,000 in unpaid fees.

The firm James, McElroy and Diehl filed the complaint Wednesday in North Carolina Superior Court. They claim Mayfield and Mayfield Motorsports owes the firm $371,973.66, plus attorney fees, late charges and interest since Oct. 22.
