25 years ago: Lawrence celebrates state football title

Lawrence High football coach Bill Freeman was carried off the field by his Lion players after LHS had walloped Manhattan, 29-3, to capture the Kansas Class 6-A championship. LHS finished with an 11-1 record, the same as previously unbeaten Manhattan. It was Lawrence’s first state title since 1979.

The Kansas Corporation Commmission was studying a request for sizable electric rate hikes because of added costs to build the $2.6 billion Wolf Creek Nuclear Plant. The big rate hike requests were due to be quite controversial before the issue was settled.

State officials noted that there was a growing need for adoptive parents, particularly in the placement of mentally and physically disadvantaged youngsters.

The 1981 merger of the Douglas County Citizens Committee on Alcoholism and the Douglas County Drug Abuse Council had had only a brief honeymoon and a number of problems had arisen regarding the two 10-year-old agencies. Officials were studying the problems and said they hoped for fast resolutions to allow the agencies to do the best job possible with the resources at hand.
