Haskell freshman dies in Montana jail

A Haskell Indian Nations University freshman died Monday after being incarcerated in a Montana county jail, authorities said.

A.J. LongSoldier, 18, was booked on Sunday into Hill County Jail, where a detention officer requested medical assistance for him about 10:30 p.m. Sunday, said Hill County Sheriff Don Brostrom.

LongSoldier, who was reportedly in Montana to attend his grandfather’s funeral, was taken by ambulance to Northern Montana Hospital in Havre, where he died.

The cause of death was not announced. The Montana Department of Criminal Investigation has been requested to investigate the incident.

LongSoldier, of Harlem, Mont., had been incarcerated on a warrant for contempt of court.
