LMH reveals makeup of work force

Lawrence Memorial Hospital, 325 Maine.

A Lawrence Memorial Hospital report revealed the makeup of its work force.

According to the report that was presented to the Board of Trustees last week:

• The hospital has 1,251 employees, making it the fifth largest employer in Lawrence.

• The annual payroll is $59 million.

• More than 80 percent of staff members are women.

• The annual turnover rate is 7 percent.

• The average wage is $26.38 per hour.

• Thirty-seven percent of its work force — the largest segment — is in nursing. Other segments are clinical, 24 percent; support, 16 percent; physicians practice, 10 percent; service, 8 percent; and leadership, 5 percent.

• Many hospitals are faced with an aging work force of nurses, but LMH is not. The largest percentage of its nurses is between the ages of 25 and 40. The number of nurses between the ages of 26 and 35 has increased 23 percent since 2001.

• The hospital had a record high number of job applicants in the third quarter of this year with 1,800. The applications were for jobs across the board, except specialty areas, said Deborah Thompson, vice president of human resources. That number is up about 20 percent from the first two quarters of this year and up about 7 percent from the third quarter of 2008.

The hospital also surveyed its employees in 2008. Here were the findings:

• 90 percent were overall satisfied or very satisfied.

• 87 percent would recommend LMH as a place to work.

• 91 percent intend to keep working at LMH.

• Those who were most satisfied were: night shift workers, PRNs, registered nurses, physicians and 6- to 10-year employees.

• Those who were least satisfied were rotating shift workers, licensed practical nurses and 1- to 5-year employees.

• The percentage of employees who “believe their position with LMH is secure” dropped from 92 percent in 2003 to 75 percent in 2008. Thompson said the economy played a major factor in the decrease.
