25 years ago: LHS trying to cut down on vandalism

Shoppers flooded local streets and sidewalks in the post-Thanksgiving retail rush. A number of local stores opened early the accommodate the eager buyers.

Emporia State University administrators were to present their plans for a statewide education service center, for teacher training, to the Kansas Board of Regents. However, long discussions were due to continue about the location of such a unit and its role and scope in the state. Kansas University wanted to know what its role might be in such a venture.

Lawrence High was preparing to meet Manhattan for the Kansas Class 6-A football title. The game in KU’s Memorial Stadium offered LHS its first chance for a new title since 1979. Manhattan had an 11-0 record while Lawrence was 10-1.

Lawrence High, meanwhile, was considering hiring a security guard or guards to cut down on thefts from student lockers and vandalism of vehicles in the school parking lot. Principal Brad Tate was to make the pitch for at least one guard to the school board.
