25 years ago: Dole to request additional funding for Haskell

In an attempt to shore up the shrinking budget for Haskell Indian Junior College, Kansas Sen. Bob Dole said he would ask for about $800,000 in additional funding for the college. Dole said such a request was reasonable and justifiable and pledged to give his best to get the added money.

State Rep. Jessie Branson who had fought and won legislative battles for child-safety restraints said she was getting a lot of calls about the lack of enforcement of the law. Officials said they would look into the charge.

Rain mixed with snow greeted early risers and there was evidence that heavier snow was on the way. Temperatures were in the upper 30s but seemed destined to drop sharply overnight. Kansas City already was getting sleet at mid-morning.

The New Yorker pizza restaurant and video arcade at 1021 Mass. were seeing dwindling interest in the video game activity and there was evidence that might be eliminated due to lack of profit.

A group was formed as the Lawrence 2000 Committee to set goals and make plans for the future. Top citizens were chosen to serve and a chairman was to be elected soon. Mayor Ernest Angino had figured heavily in the proposal and a Dec. 1 meeting was planned to elect a chairman and begin the goal-setting process.
