100 years ago: University boulevard on its way to being constructed

From the Lawrence Daily World for Nov. 18, 1909: The university boulevard which has been discussed and agitated for months is at last assured of success. The state penitentiary has offered to furnish the brick for the state’s portion of the work. The brick will be made by the convicts at Lansing and can be brought here at little expense. . . . The local street car line is due to get two closed cars this week with more on the way. There are due to be seven closed cars altogether. . . . Iowa University students are making elaborate plans to attend the football game here with Kansas and the gates were open last night to allow those Iowans who are here to watch their team practice. . . . Rumor has it that the Bell Brothers piano factory here will soon be moved to Mishawaka, Ind. The Indiana town has been planning to steal the Bell factory and the town is offering Bell more than $10,000 to make the move. Officials say the factory will be nearer major markets and that transportation costs will be less. . . . George Nicholson of Baldwin, the big cement man and patron of Baker University, has applwed for a life insurance policy of $1.5 million. It is believed to be the largest policy in history and the company has some 25 doctors looking him over to make sure he is a good risk.
