Highway Patrol to target game-day revelers

Kansas Highway Patrol troopers will be on the lookout for drunken drivers today after Kansas University’s last home football game of the year, against the University of Nebraska.

Edna Buttler, highway patrol spokeswoman, said officers would be out removing impaired drivers from the streets and pulling drivers over for other violations. Troopers refer to the patrols as RAVEs, Roving Aggressive Violation Enforcement.

Buttler said the patrols would be conducted throughout Douglas County, including in the city limits of Lawrence.

“You want to get the impaired drivers pretty quick, before they get out there and start causing problems,” said Buttler, who will participate in the patrol.

Officers are paid overtime for the extra enforcement, through a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation.

“Please don’t drink and drive,” Buttler said.

During a similar saturation patrol last week in Manhattan after the KU-Kansas State game, six people were arrested for driving under the influence, the KHP said.
