40 years ago: Firm awarded low-cost housing project

The Lawrence Housing Authority named the local architectural firm of Robertson and Associates to design the city’s multimillion-dollar low-cost housing project. There were to be 120 units of elderly and handicapped housing and 130 units of general occupancy dwellings.

Gov. Robert Docking said the state would defer more than $11 million in highway construction in the fiscal year ending the coming June 30 as a result of president Nixon’s request for construction cutbacks to combat inflation.

A seasonal cool trend continued with highs around 50 and lows around 30 degrees over a long series of days. Rain had let up after dousing the region earlier in the month.
