Services set for former Kan. governor Avery

? Funeral services will be Saturday for former Gov. William H. Avery in the northeast Kansas town where he grew up.

Avery died Nov. 4 at the age of 98. He was elected in 1964 to a single, two-year term as governor, then lost a re-election bid in 1966 to Democrat Robert Docking.

Visitation takes place Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Wakefield United Methodist Church in Wakefield. The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Avery grew up in the Clay County town on his family’s farm. After serving as governor he worked as an oil company executive in Wichita. He returned to Wakefield in 1977 to serve as vice president and chairman of Farmers and Merchants Bank.
