25 years ago: Carlin will not seek Senate term

With a week remaining in the formal drive, United Fund’s total stood at 83 percent of the goal of $470,882, and there was high optimism of success by then.

A seasonal trend was blamed for a steep decline in local building permits in October. There had been only 12 single-family permits compated to 31 the year before.

Glen Mason’s Kansas football team’s record fell to 4-6 as Nebraska scored a 41-7 romp past the Jayhawks before 50,653 in Memorial Stadium. The season finale was to be Nov 17 at Missouri.

Kansas Democratic Gov. John Carlin said he had no plans to enter the 1986 U.S. Senate race while incumbent Republican Bob Dole said he definitely would see another six-year term. Many had expected Carlin to challenge Dole.

U.S. Rep. Jim Slattery, a Democrat, also said he would not seek the governorship in ’86 and said his goal was to serve his congressional district to “the best of my ability.”

Snow, the first of the season, greeted early risers as a cold snap swept into the area for the weekend. But most of the snow melted as it hit the ground and the storm was not due to persist and temperatures were due to moderate.
